Gene Mapping

Abstract

Gene mapping is a powerful tool that allows geneticists to identify genes that cause Mendelian disease, pinpoint loci for beneficial traits, and to compile and refine reference genomes for any species. This field of research begun with the first identification of co-inheritance of traits, through to linkage analysis, accelerating with the Human Genome Project, and still applicable in the current age of next- and third-generation sequencing. Gene mapping has proven to be a high yield technique with both clinical and agricultural benefits.
