In the last decade a lively debate about postmodernism and geography has involved most geographical journals. The discussion was basically focused on the pivotal role of space in social theory and on the need for a repositioning of geography within the mainstream debates in the philosophy and method of the human sciences. An extremely synthetic "state of the art", within such a debate is provided by this paper: postmodern geography is challenged by the emerging collapse of spatial-temporal categories associated with the evolution of contemporary society; only accepting such a challenge geographers can aim to gain a central role in the future scientific investigation of the world.
