Geopolitics, military modernisation, and the future of the Indo-Pacific

Research output: Book/ReportBookpeer-review

Abstract

To what extent does geopolitics explain the current wave of force modernisation in the Indo-Pacific region? This book examines this central question in international security studies by examining the top defence spenders in the region, dividing the top spenders into three groups for analysis: great powers, middle powers, and small powers. It assesses the key drivers of force modernisation and conducts a deep country-specific analysis of the top defence spenders. It finds that while geopolitics has been a key driver, the actual picture is more complex and nuanced, requiring the consideration of other factors to truly understand why and how force modernization has evolved. This book concludes that deep area studies expertise is needed to better understand the regional arms phenomenon as well as the complex and rapidly changing geostrategic landscape in the Indo-Pacific.
