Abstract

An overview on Hamiltonian optics was presented. Characterization of ray mapping and opening a link to waves was analyzed. Ray tracing provided the map from any ray at the entry of an optical system to its configuration on exit. The methods proposed proved to be powerful tools of geometrical optics and their direct analogues played important roles in various areas of classical physics.
