    Abstract

Segment on ABC TV history series 'Rewind' presented by Michelle Arrow. 'Rewind' uncovers the story of how Australian inventor, Lawrence Hargrave, played a role in the Wright brothers' aviation breakthrough. Almost 10 years before the Wrights took to the air, Hargrave flew his radical box kite design at a beach near Wollongong. The Wrights' glider had many features in common with the box kite. Could Hargrave's work have influenced their design? There's no evidence the Australian inventor was in correspondence with the American brothers. Yet Hargrave's supporters are insistent there is a link. So what was the connection? 'Rewind' historian, Michelle Arrow, uncovers a fascinating story. First broadcast 15 August, 2004.
