Abstract

High-power and ultra-efficient operation of a cladding-pumped Tm-doped silica fiber laser with core composition optimized for efficient 'two-for-one' crossrelaxation is reported. The laser was pumped by three beam-shaped diode-bars at 790nm and produced 30.8 W of output at 2025 nm from a 2 m fiber for 58.5 W of launched pump power. The corresponding slope efficiency with respect to launched pump power was 61%.
