Abstract

The higher order hyperfine terms in the spin Hamiltonian are evaluated for the general case where the hyperfine interaction raises from the electron orbital angular momentum and the electron spin dipolar-nuclear spin angular momentum interactions of a d-electron associated dominantly with one nucleus coupling with another nucleus, where the electronic wavefunction is described by a Slater-type orbital. The method handles long range and short range coupling including the free atom case. The case for a one-electron transition metal ion in a crystal field environment of octahedral symmetry is examined.
