Abstract
It is sometimes asserted that Jesus and the rise of Christianity led to the recognition of 'humility', the lowering of oneself before an equal, as a virtue. In two articles in 1991, S. B. Dawes challenged this claim, arguing that humility as a social virtue finds its roots in the Hebrew Bible. This article assesses Dawes' claim, the result being that, although related notions certainly exist, 'humility' as the virtue of lowering oneself before an equal is not present in the Scriptures of Israel.
