Gladiator II (2024): an historian's view

    Abstract

Some 200 amphitheatres have been located across the Roman Empire. Many can be visited by tourists today, whether at El Djem in Tunisia or at Cirencester in the United Kingdom, but towering above all is the Colosseum in Rome - the main location for Ridley Scott's recent film, 'Gladiator II' (2024). The Colosseum was completed in 80 CE, thus by the period portrayed in the film 'Gladiator II' (211 CE), it would have been 131 years old. The Colosseum continues as a venue - being repaired as late as 422 CE, more than 100 years after Christianity had become the state religion.
