Abstract

Improvement of detection limits of proton induced x-ray emission (PIXE) by substrate signal reduction was discussed. It was observed that improvement in limits of detection (LOD) was most noticeable for selected elements collected on the smaller stages of the impactor. The results showed that LOD for aerosol samples were improved by approximately 50% after reducing the cross-sectional area of the analytical beam based on results obtained from microscope photographs of aerosols deposits.
