    Abstract

This paper examines some important policy level issues which impact on metadata implementation at the State Library of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. These issues present challenges and opportunities for the establishment of a new "digital" Library identity and for the forging of new "digital" relationships with client groups and with other cultural, educational, government, and commercial institutions. Such issues are usually highlighted through analysis of discrete or related local, national or international projects. The paper provides a complementary perspective by taking, instead, a single, whole-of-organisation approach.
