    Abstract

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have always been early adopters of communication technologies. We are also innovators and have sophisticated methods of communication that have provided a means of communication across this vast continent for thousands of years. We recognised the power of all media, and particularly print media, as a force for communicating information quickly to other Indigenous people and groups here and across the world. From building alliances with settlers who had access to media to establishing our own media organisations, we have and will continue to utilise media and communication technologies to connect with each other, to educate settlers, and to ensure we have a voice in the public domain that represents us and speaks truth to our lives and struggles.
