Abstract
The websites of HLT Central and LT World provide links to news stories and press releases from companies and other organizations active in the commercial speech and language technology area. A close look at the stories found in both sites reveals that data gathering exercise can't be taken as a reliable measure of the relative strengths of the speech and text-based sectors of the industry. An overview is given of some observations on what is talked about in 72 stories that were about products and services in this area of interest. Topics discussed include machine translation, text search and question answering, and text entry.
