Abstract
We consider extensions of the twin-trap Bose-Einstein condensate system of Javanainen and Yoo [Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 161 (1996)] to include pumping from thermal atom baths as a simple example of an inexhaustible source of coherent atoms. We study this system for two forms of thermal pumping, both with and without the influence of interatomic collisions. In the presence of pumping, the detection process is still able to stabilize the relative phase of the condensates against the diffusion induced by the collisions. We also examine the effects of pumping on the phenomenon of collapses and revivals of the relative phase between the condensates.
