Abstract
A detailed investigation of a barium vapor laser (BVL) is reported. The study has two goals: elucidation of excitation mechanisms with emphasis at specific wavelengths and development of BVL technology with emphasis on obtaining high beam quality appropriate to fiber-optic testing and remote sensing applications. An externally heated low-repetition-rate BVL is described, and an extensive parametric and spectroscopic study of the device is presented.
