    Abstract

The concept of upāya (-kauśalya) ‘skilful means, expedient means’, prominent in Mahāyāna Buddhism, was adopted by the Manichaeans in the East. This paper discusses the concept and its application in the Chinese Manichaean texts from Dunhuang, and it offers a brief note on upāya in relation to modern translation of Manichaean texts.
