    Abstract

The name of Felix Jacoby (1876–1959) is synonymous with his multivolume work Die Fragmente der griechischen Historiker (FGrHist or FGrH). This mammoth collection of fragments of some one thousand ancient writers, as quoted or paraphrased by later ancient authors, is all the more remarkable for being the product of one man – yet it very nearly did not see the light of day because of Jacoby's earlier graduate career. Jacoby almost completed three of five planned parts before he died. Today, Jacoby's work continues as the premier research source for the ancient world in Brill's New Jacoby (BNJ and BNJ 2), for Parts I–III, and the continuatio volumes FGrH IV and FGrH V.
