    Abstract

The statue Métanoia is a powerful example of how modern art can speak to our spiritual side. The first Métanoia (the Greek word for a new knowing) was made in 2020 from stoneware clay, and was glazed and varnished to withstand interior and exterior conditions. The statue gifted to the Macquarie University Art Collection was finished in 2022, and has a platina lustre. On 10 May 2021, Belgian sculptor Johan Tahon was invited to have a private audience with Pope Francis, during which he presented Métanoia to the Pope. A day later, on the eve of the start of the Ignatian year, Tahon presented a copy of Métanoia to the Jesuits (Society of Jesus).
