title = "Language exchange websites for independent learning",
abstract = "This chapter provides report on a learning-to-learn program carried out with higher-level learners at Cultura Inglesa Sao Paulo. It focuses on fostering not only peer mediation and co-operative learning experiences but it also aims at improving students' oral communicative potential. The technological learning tool used in the out-of-class experience with the aforementioned learners, Common European Framework (CEF) Level C1, was the VoiceThread online program. The VoiceThread project can favour more independent learners who are familiar with technology and also cater to those more introvert ones who might feel overexposed and vulnerable to speak in front of a group. The VoiceThread experiment involved about 30 higher-level learners officially enrolled in a CEF C1 English course at a private language institute in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. These learners were in the second term of a three-semester course leading towards the Cambridge Proficiency Exam (CPE).",
