The protection for apologies in the Civil Liability Act 2002 recognises the importance that many people place on receiving an appropriate apology that includes an admission of responsibility. A number of researchers have shown that the underlying objectives of many people who have been the victims of alleged negligence or other harm - what many people seek more than
anything else - is an apology that includes an acknowledgement of the mistake made from the person responsible or a person who can clearly be seen to represent an organisation that is at fault.
