Abstract
A horn antenna with three dimensional layer-by-layer photonic crystal, which provides highly efficient transmission from a defect waveguide to free space, was developed. The directional nature of the radiation pattern in the H-plane and broader radiation characteristics in the E-plane were also demonstrated. The horn antenna can also be integrated with other layer-by-layer photonic crystal components to form ultracompact devices for communication systems. It was observed that the -10 dB reflection coefficient bandwidth of the antenna was 8.2%.
