Abstract

LEAP Express draws on creativity in literacy education as possessing transformative potential, enabling students to interpret, reimagine, and reshape their worlds, while increasing confidence and opportunity (Grigorenko, 2019). The initiative encourages students to situate themselves in their emotive and physical surroundings to inspire creative writing and self-reflection. The recentering of the learner in the creative process and the scaffolded tasks that break down complex concepts and forms, empower learners to engage meaningfully in different ways of thinking and creating. Students are supported throughout the program by university student cofacilitators who model creativity and embed discussions of possible futures and varied learning pathways into the literacy activities.
