Abstract

Writer Noelle Janaczewska first nurtured her passion for Brazil with guidebooks and stories about lost explorers of the Amazon. Later she discovered Brazil as a source of political and cultural ideas. And then came music, and the language. And very recently – last year in fact – she actually made it the real Brazil. Now Noelle is back in Marrickville, a Sydney suburb with a large number of Portuguese speaking residents – including migrants from Brazil, and she continues to learn Portuguese. Brazil is more real to her than it was before she travelled there, but it still inhabits her imagination as a mix of other people's music and writing, as well as her own memories. In Let's Go Brazil! Noelle mixes language lessons, music and musings to create an audio guide for an imaginary journey to Brazil that will entertain and provoke – and perhaps even get you dancing around the kitchen table. Written and narrated by Noelle Janaczewska. Duration: 50 minutes. First broadcast by ABC Radio National on 17 December 2005.
