Libanius and higher education in Antioch

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

    Abstract

Lieu uses an account of Libanius' career to show what it reveals about education in Antioch and the east more generally. He describes the activities - and problems - of sophists, teachers, and some students too, and records some of the changes taking place in higher education at the time. In doing this Lieu is able to bring to our attention some new translations of Libanius' writings on education and to increase our knowledge of one of the most important sources on the subject in late antiquity.
