Abstract
A new bedrock map of Massachusetts has been published by the U. S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the State Geologist. The map units are grouped into eight lithotectonic packages. These groups tell geologic stories that constrain any model for the tectonic evolution of Massachusetts and probably a large part of New England. The paper summarizes the reasons for these groups.
