    Abstract

Marine mammals are distributed throughout the world’s oceans. Considered sentinel species of marine ecosystem health because of their high trophic position, they fill important ecological roles in the marine environment. The marine waters of Australia are home to a variety of marine mammals, ranging from coastal species such as fur seals and sea lions to migratory giants such as whales. Marine mammals are protected in Australian waters under national legislation, such that any scientific research causing an impact on marine mammals usually requires animal ethics approval. This requirement is to ensure human–wildlife interactions are minimised and animal welfare is prioritised.
