Abstract

Frequent turn-on, turn-off and output reference changes in power electronic converters—common in coordinated systems—can induce significant input and output voltage and current oscillations, even when controllers are well tuned. These oscillations become more pronounced under weak DC-bus conditions, degrading overall performance. Although advanced nonlinear and predictive controllers can mitigate such effects, they are typically complex and computationally intensive. This paper proposes an enhancement to a conventional proportional–integral (PI)-based control strategy to improve dynamic performance by reducing overshoot and undershoot during transient conditions without modifying the original PI gains. The proposed method employs a novel algorithm to generate an adaptively smoothed reference voltage, which is then processed by the PI controller. The approach demonstrates robust and consistent performance across varying PI configurations. Experimental results confirm suppression of critical input current transient deviations by up to 94.8% and improvement in input transient convergence by approximately 57.3%–67.6%, validating its effectiveness under practical operating conditions.
