Abstract
A new approach to VLSI custom circuit floorplanning is presented that is a system combining algorithms and VLSI specialized knowledge. This combination permits the automation of tasks too complex to implement using standard programming techniques, and permits the enhancement of the solution-search process by exploiting and interpreting algorithm results. An experimental floorplanning system is described. The system design philosophy permits its continuous evolution toward expert-designer performance.
