Abstract

The complexity of healthcare buildings creates many difficulties for building designers to deliver a design that generate value for different users. Client requirements management with the support of Building Information Modeling (BIM) can help design teams to deal the complexity inherent to those projects. Thus, it is possible to deal with problems related to the delivery of the built environment in the healthcare sector, such as: high amount of requirements from different clients (e.g. staff, patients and their companions); changes in managers resulting in changes in requirements; changes in the hospital organizational structure; changes in the user requirements throughout the process, which are often not well documented; lack of knowledge from designers on client needs and requirements. This article is part of a broader research
project, and is focused on modeling client requirements of the emergency department of a public university hospital, with the support of BIM. One of the main contributions of this article is the identification and structuring of generic
requirements that can be used as a reference for future changes in the building being investigated, or for the development of similar new healthcare projects.
