Abstract
Based on the Timeline Followback (TLFB; Sobell & Sobell, 1992), the Modified Timeline Followback Interview (Norberg, Norton, & Olivier, 2009) was developed to assess the psychological context of drinking episodes and alcohol-related consequences. The TLFB is a calendar-based method for collecting retrospective estimates of alcohol use over the previous 90 days. The original TLFB was modified to include assessment of drinking reasons and alcohol-related consequences. The interviewer inquires whether the purpose of each drinking episode was to increase positive feelings or decrease aversive feelings, and participants report on the consequences they encountered for each drinking episode by using a list of 25 possible alcohol-related consequences. The convergent validity of the TLFB was demonstrated in a sample of university students who experienced at least occasional anxiety in social or performance situations. Mean administration time for the modified TLFB is 14.6 minutes.
