Abstract
Dipole moments and molar Kerr constants (×1012) at 25° are reported for cyanomethyl methyl ether (2.99 D, +111) 1-cyanopropane (3.53 D, +281), 1-cyano-2-methylpropane (3.62 D, +256), 3-cyanopropene (3.48 D, +263), and diphenylcyanomethane (3.57 D, -18) as solutes in carbon tetrachloride, together with the molar Kerr constant of 1,2-dicyanoethane (+21) as a solute in benzene. Conformations of the molecules are investigated. The possibility of solvent-induced conformational changes of 1,2-dicyanoethane is discussed.
