title = "Moral education in a Shanghai kindergarten—how do children perceive social values and norms?",
abstract = "Moral education is one of the main components in kindergarten and school teaching. This chapter tries to understand in which way moral concepts are transmitted to children, and how children actively internalize them. Methods of field observation and interview based on one specific picture book with children are combined to investigate the social values, norms, and rules expressed in the local kindergarten and to reveal children{\textquoteright}s subjective construction of the social values and norms suggested by the educational context. From the picture book task, different characteristics of 4–6-year-old children{\textquoteright}s interpreting the content and theme of the book can be carefully analyzed.",
