    Abstract

Memoir essay that explores the therapeutic effect - the Greek term is 'thalassa' - upon the writer's grief and sadness at her mother's Alzheimer's, through immersion in the sea waters of the Coogee NSW ocean pool, McIver's Ladies Baths. The essay explores both the culturally diverse women who frequent the pool, and the underwater sea life within the pool itself. The writing aims to recreate the solace of immersion and to acknowledge the importance of Australia's only women's pool for women over the course of the past 100 years.
