Abstract
The paper offers an overview of the association of music with the celestial harmony of the spheres and its employment in Plato as a state of consciousness for both philosophers and citizens of his ideal city (Magnesia). The adaptation of such views in early Christianity, leading to Augustine's De Musica, is also explored.
