    Abstract

A less expensive, more compact variant of periodically-poled lithium niobate (PPLN) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) design which provides narrowband, single-mode tunability of its signal output radiation, is presented. The design allows to employ a multimode (MM) pump laser and still attain single-mode tunability of OPO signal or idler radiation. The coherent infrared signal output from the tunable diode laser-seeded, MM-pumped PPLN OPO has a narrow optical bandwidth and beam quality comparable to PPLN OPO-pumped with a single-mode Nd:YAG laser.
