    Abstract

Despite much eulogizing about the death of the nation-state and nationalism, these political forms continue to flourish amid intensified globalization. The growth of nationalist contentions since the end of the Cold War has been reflected in heightened scholarly interest in nationalist phenomena. Drawing upon this literature, this entry disentangles some of the conceptual confusion that surrounds these topics, as well as introducing some of the key debates, namely debates about the nature of nations and nationalism, their causes, and their periodization, which are all canvassed in the second half of the entry.
