Abstract
Support for democracy is waning in SouthEast Asia, whilst China is directly and indirectly promoting autocratic capitalism as an alternative development model for developing countries to emulate. This has implications for Australia's national interests in our region. The article advocates greater efforts by Australia to support the strengthening of liberal democratic institutions in the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia.
