Abstract

This paper derives the asymptotic SER and outage probability of MIMO optimum combining (OC) systems with correlated Rayleigh-faded user channels and SIMO-OC systems with correlated Rician-faded user channels. Our results are based on new asymptotic expansions which we derive for the c.d.f. and p.d.f. of the SINR at the OC output which, interestingly, are expressed in terms of either the moments of the characteristic polynomial or the generalized variance of complex random matrices. As such, by leveraging prior results from random matrix theory, we can directly obtain new closed-form performance results for a wide range of co-channel interferer channel models, including unequal power, correlated Rayleigh and Rician. For the MIMO-OC system, we prove that receive correlation decreases the array gain, hence increasing the SER at high SNR. For the SIMO-OC system, we prove that the Rician K factor increases the array gain, hence decreasing the SER at high SNR.
