Abstract
A eutectic-like lamellar structure consisting of two phases is observed in as-spun ribbons of a Zn-rich Zn-6.3at.%Ag hyper-peritectic alloy. Coupled growth is proposed to take place under rapid solidification conditions with a growth velocity above that for absolute stability. A qualitative analysis indicates that the formation of the eutectic-like lamellar structure is possibly ascribed to the conversion of the equilibrim peritectic reaction into a metastable eutectic reaction under5 sufficiently rapid solidification conditions.
