    Abstract

3-(N-Methylamino)glutaric acid has been identified as a new free amino acid in extracts from Prochloron didemnii (Lewin), a unique prokaryotic algal symbiont associated with certain didemnid ascidians. Its structure was established by elucidation of the mass spectra of its TMSi and other derivatives and confirmed by synthesis.
