N2 - This study explores the integration of a near-zero refractive index (NZRI) metasurface to enhance the performance of an electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) resonator antenna, with a specific emphasis on improving radiation directivity in the main lobe direction. A single-unit-cell split-ring resonator is designed to achieve a homogeneous NZRI at an operational frequency of 11 GHz. The engineered refractive index, approaching zero, facilitates precise phase alignment and effective radiation focusing, optimizing the EBG resonator antenna's performance. Numerical simulations reveal a significant enhancement in directivity, achieving a peak value of approximately 17 dBi, alongside an improved aperture efficiency of 29%. These results underscore the potential of NZRI metasurfaces in advancing high-directivity antenna designs, positioning them as promising solutions for next-generation electromagnetic systems and applications requiring focused and efficient radiation.
