Abstract
In this paper, a novel method is presented for the measurement of the thermo-optic coefficient (TOC) (dn/dT) of the single-mode fibers using optoelectronic oscillation (OEO) over fiber lengths from 100 m to 100 km. This method is applied for the measurement of the TOC precisely of 1 km of standard single-mode fibers over a temperature range from 14 °C to 35 °C. The measured TOC is found to be 1.094 × 10-5. The measurement uncertainty is estimated to be 3.4 × 10-7. Additionally, the dependence of the TOC on the wavelength of the laser used is investigated. A slight change in the TOC of 4.5 × 10-8 is observed over the wavelength range from 1500 to 1630 nm.
