Abstract

Theoretical and experimental evidence is collected which indicates that the upper level of the C₂ high-pressure bands (d ³Π_g (v' = 6) → a ³Π_u) is populated via a potential-curve crossing by the metastable state ⁵Π_g. This metastable state is populated preferentially during formation of C₂ from free carbon atoms.
