Abstract

The NatallKwaZulu region has the highest seroprevalence of HIV infection in South Africa.' As part of local efforts to monitor the epidemic we are measuring HIV seroprevalence in various groups. Since 15% of all patients who have tested HIV-positive in this hospital over the last 5 years were young children (unpublished data), we are monitoring rates of infection in children admitted to the paediatric ward.
