    Abstract

This contribution provides the first overall survey of the palaeontological resources in institutional collections of Australia and New Zealand. It is based on data collected and compiled as part of a wider programme of compilation for the World Directory of Palaeontological Collections under the aegis of the International Palaeontological Association. Questionnaires were circulated to all institutions in Australia and New Zealand in 1980 with follow-up requests at various later dates. On the whole the response has been good and it is now possible to provide a reasonably full compilation of data from the thirty-seven institutions holding fossil collections in the region.
