    Abstract

This paper presents an ethnographic case study of a participatory video production workshop conducted by the author in Fiji with a group of rural women engaged in small income generation schemes. As the researcher and facilitator of the video workshop, I was interested in observing the process of participatory production and how it acts as a catalyst for change within a given community context. For the participants the main objective was to use their newly acquired production skills to create a promotional DVD that would showcase their work and products to new clients. The paper provides an understanding of the Fijian context and discusses how participatory media can encourage dialogue and community building in a socially and politically fractured society. Excerpts from the six-minute video produced by the women will be shown during the presentation.
