Abstract

Healthcare systems are increasingly complex and care processes imply risks related to clinical practice. Considering the complexity and flexibility in which care is provided, patients and citizens play a key role in promoting a better and safer care experience. GRC performed a pre-post intervention observational study of nurses preparing and administering medications. The patients intervention mainly focused on the design and implementation of an information flyer and the health education tools outlined to create awareness in patients and family members of increased readability and effectiveness of the communication tools. 176 questionnaires were completed by hospitalised patients or relatives at three major teaching hospitals: the results are reported. A wider patient engagement in patient safety projects requires more investments in patients education and more organisational efforts to let patient involvement become a systemic good practice.
