Abstract

The characteristics of a falling film heat exchanger for use on the collector loop heat exchanger in a pumped solar water heater have been assessed, and a TRNSYS model has been developed for evaluating long-term performance. The falling film heat exchanger is based on a conventional gas storage water heater tank with the gas combustion tube converted to a water /water heat exchanger. The annual performance of a falling film solar water heater with in-tank electric boosting was found to be lower than a direct-coupled system. The winter performance of a series gas-boosted system out-performs an in-tank electric boosted system due to improved tank thermal stratification.
