    Abstract

This chapter has presented some of the political issues that can affect the management of the environment by a nation state. It has discussed the disparity in time scales between politics and the environment, the institutions involved in the political process and how they can affect government decision making. Political and institutional changes are necessary to make the paradigm shift to a sustainable society. These changes are occurring now and business organisations need to respond proactively to them.
