Abstract

The paper intends to show that the postmodernity of Ivan Slamnig's only novel, Bolja polovica hrabrosti, is not purely formal in nature and does not come about merely on the level of the fenotype of 'language/form/pattern awareness'. The central notion of the paper is the ideologically saturated subversion of the pattern of narrative('s) continuity and the introduction of the other on the level of the formal narrative paradigme into the body of tradition overwrought with national intensity. The first part of the paper elaborates the tranference of the story throughout the history of the Croatian novel. The second part discusses Slamnig's production of digressive'turns'from the field where tradition is being upheld into the field where it is being subverted. The third part focuses on the deconstruction of the story and the narration.
